Lew Smither III New Director of Golf at Cypress Run Golf Club

Lew Smither IIILew Smither III, the Director of Instruction at Innisbrook Resort, has resigned his position to become the new Director of Golf at Cypress Run Golf Club in Tarpon Springs. In his new position, he will oversee all golf-related operations and work to establish the club as the premier private club in the area.

Smither comes from a family with an established background in the golf industry. His father Lew Smither II, a Master PGA professional, has operated and owned several golf courses as well as served as golf coach at Eastern Kentucky University. He is also a past President of the North Florida Section PGA and the Kentucky Section PGA.  

His brother Gary is a golf course superintendent who has held superintendent responsibilities at Bent Tree Golf Club, TPC at Prestancia and The Meadows, all of which are in Sarasota. He's also spent time at Land Fall Country Club in Wilmington, North Carolina and is currently stationed at Misty Creek, a private club in Sarasota.

Smither began his golf career at Sara Bay Country Club, in Sarasota, Florida where he was an assistant professional for four years. Sara Bay is a private club rich in golf tradition.  The club was first organized by the legendary Bobby Jones, who hired course designer Donald Ross to design the course and hired Tommy Amour to be its first professional.

After departing from Sara Bay, Smither went on to be the Head Professional at Bent Tree Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida for four years. While there he was the host professional for the annual LPGA Bent Tree Ladies Classic and the LPGA qualifying school finals.

Cypress Run Golf ClubHe then joined Innisbrook in 1984 as the Director of Instruction and has since overseen the education of the staff members in addition to coaching and mentoring more than12,000 golfers.

Smither has been consistently rated as one of the top 20 teachers in the state of Florida for the past 10 years by Golf Digest magazine, is a recipient of the North Florida Section Teacher of the Year award and is a four-time teacher of the year in the West Central Chapter of the North Florida PGA.

Smither has coached and instructed PGA Tour, Champions Tour and LPGA Tour players, collegiate golfers as well as future junior stars on the American Junior Golfer’s Association Tour. He's has also qualified for the National Club Professional Championship twice and won the PGA Chapter Championship.

Smither said he is excited and looking forward to creating the best private club and golfing experience at Cypress Run Golf Club.
