Three Advance to U.S. Open

Joey Lamielle, Michael Barbosa, and Sam Saunders, advanced to the 111th U.S. Open Championship from sectional Qualifying conducted by the Florida State Golf Association at Quail Valley Golf Club, in Vero Beach on Monday, June 6.

Joey Lamielle
, 28, of Sarasota, carded rounds of 68-72--140 to grab medalist honors. Lamielle’s first round included five birdies in a row in route to his round of four-under par 68. Lamielle played a solid round of golf in the final round, posting an even par 72. Lamielle said “Once I bogeyed the last two holes I thought I didn’t make it. The afternoon's round was a rollercoaster; I was just trying to survive.” This will be Lamielle’s second trip to the U.S. Open Championship.

Michael Barbosa
, 28, of Saint Petersburg, prevailed in a playoff to punch his ticket to the U.S. Open. Barbosa fired rounds of 68-73--141. Barbosa’s bogey on the first playoff hole was good enough to earn his first appearance to the U.S. Open. Barbosa said “I am speechless right now, I can’t believe I am playing in the U.S. Open.”

Sam Saunders
, 23, of Orlando, fired a 69-72—141, to grab the final spot in a playoff. Saunders, the grandson of Arnold Palmer, finished strong on his last nine holes, carding an impressive four-under par 32, to put him in a three way tie for the last spot. Saunders would go on to make par on the first playoff hole to clinch the last spot. Saunders stated, “This is a great feeling, I really worked hard on my last nine holes to put myself in a position to qualify.” Saunders also will be playing in his first U.S. Open.
